Wisconsin Avenue Farmers’ Market Opens Busiest Season Ever
The Social Safeway never closes. However, with the arrival of spring, shoppers on Wisconsin Avenue have another choice for local produce and foods and a host of outdoor activities. It's the Wisconsin Avenue Farmers' Market, open for business every Saturday morning from May until the middle of November, right across from the Safeway in the Hardy Middle School yard.
Now in its fourth year, the market is having a “great season” according to founder and manager Lauren Shweder Biel. “We had the biggest opening day (May 12th) in history and last week we had a new high” of almost 800 customers.
While word-of-mouth and social media bring people in, Biel keeps adding to the market to attract as diverse a group of shoppers as possible. To the bicycle clinic and live music, she’s brought in a new food truck every week which has made a “huge difference,” particularly with the young professionals who follow the market on twitter. A long asked-for shaded picnic area, especially welcome by older patrons, was set up by customers. For kids and animal lovers, Biel has organized pet adoptions and face-paining and brought in live goats, chickens and other animals for petting. And for canine-owners, Biel reiterates: “dogs are always welcome.”
The Glover Park-Burleith Farmers' Market runs from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm every Saturday through November 17th.
