Gray withdraws ex-campaign chief for convention post

Mayor Vincent Gray withdrew the nomination of embattled former campaign manager Lorraine Green to be the chairperson of the Washington Convention Center and Sports Authority, the agency that controls the Convention Center, Nationals Stadium, RFK Stadium and the D.C Armory.

In a statement, Gray said, "Ms. Green would have been a great chairperson and would have brought a great deal to the table given the respect she has garnered and her prominent relationships with the business and convention-related sectors. Mayor Gray wishes Ms. Green much success in her business venture," an endeavor not described in the statement.

Green resigned abruptly from her longtime human resources position at Amtrak last month after scandals over nepotism and other hiring missteps in the Gray administration.

"I like Lorraine Green and I'm sorry not to be able to work with her in this role," said Councilmember Jack Evans, who last month put Green's nomination "indefinitely" on hold after mounting media and legal controversies led to new investigations and questions involving Green.
