UPS Crime Spree Underreported, Says MPD

D.C. MPD is paying attention to stolen UPS and Fedex packages. "For the past several weeks we've been paying particular attention to deliveries in the area.  Additionally, we've reached out to UPS and FedEx to assist. We've asked the drivers to pay particular attention to anyone suspicious and report this behavior to us.

Perpetrators have been known to follow the drivers along their route waiting to grab the package once the driver completes the delivery. Also, we've asked them to attempt to conceal the package upon delivery, if possible.  Last, we've asked them to ring the bell or knock to announce the delivery.  In the past a great deal of thefts occurred while the residents were actually home, although they had no idea a delivery occurred since the driver never rang the bell," says MPD
Lieutenant John M. Hedgecock.

The MPD is asking residents to report such thefts. "We scoured our crime numbers and only found two residents who reported this type of theft since April of this year!" says Hedgecock.
