'Private Confessions' Celebrates Ingmar Bergman

The US Premiere of Private Confessions, part of the Bergman 100 Celebration will take place Wednesday, December 6 through Saturday, December 9, 2017 in the Eisenhower Theater at The Kennedy Center. A co-production between National Theater of Norway and Riksteatret, the performance is in Norwegian with projected English titles.

Ingmar Bergman, legendary Swedish artist directed more than 60 films and documentaries, most of which he also wrote, and directed more than 170 plays. His creations constantly navigated the boundaries of the human psyche, while at the same time exploring love, beauty, and the meaning of life in ravishing and astounding ways. This groundbreaking artist’s centennial includes exclusive opportunities to experience some of his most eminent work reimagined for the stage.

Bergman’s muse, celebrated Norwegian director Liv Ullmann, expands Bergman's 1996 film into a stage adaptation of poignant, non-linear series of “confessions” which delve into the realms of infidelity, family relationships, loneliness, and the weighty results of keeping secrets deep within.

Step into a deeply personal and heartbreakingly authentic world of secrets and explore what keeping those secrets does to one’s relationships. Ingmar Bergman’s powerfully penned 1996 film of the same name delved into the deepest thoughts of his mother, which were revealed to him only after her death through the pages of her diary.

Ullmann, helmed the film; she now returns to direct a stage adaptation of the work, which premiered in Oslo in January 2016. The play’s powerful source material has been expanded to include the diaries Ingmar himself kept during the film’s production. The result is a poignant, non-linear series of “confessions” which delve into the realms of infidelity, family relationships, loneliness, and the weighty results of keeping secrets deep within.
