Intruder sexually assaults woman in her Burleith home

A woman was sexually assaulted by an intruder Sunday morning in her Burleith area home according to a police report. The woman was awakened "by the suspect sexually assaulting her," police told the Washington Post.

At 7:30 a.m on the 3800 block of S Street NW, the victim, not a Georgetown student, screamed and the intruder fled. Police describe the suspect as a white man with brown hair and an average build.

This incident seems similar to a string of crimes on campus and around the university - a man breaks in, assaults a woman and flees from the residence.

Caitlin Huey-Burns, a 23-year-old student in Georgetown's School of Continuing Studies,  doesn't get out of class on Wednesdays until 10 p.m.. Huey-Burns says, "I'm concerned being a young female walking near campus at night, especially since this girl was attacked in her own home."  She adds, "I often walk to the bus alone, but now I'm going to make sure I walk with someone. Or I might start driving to campus, so I can get to my car quickly."

According to Vox Populi, MPD Lt. John Hedgecock wrote, "In response, we have stepped up our patrol presence in the area and are working closely with our sex crimes unit."

If you have any information or witness suspicious activity, please call 911.

Update:  Lt. Hedgecock will provide an update at the August 30  ANC 2E meeting at 6:30 at Georgetown Visitation School, 35th and Volta Place, NW, Heritage Room
