Georgetown Parklets Sept. 18

On Friday, September 18, four local and Georgetown-based businesses will join the Georgetown Business Improvement District to participate in Park(ing) Day initiatives, transforming metered parking spots into temporary public spaces. Launched in San Francisco in 2005, Park(ing) Day has since spread to cities around the world as residents, designers, and businesses collaborate to create dialogue around public and private spaces.

All day on Friday, October 18, find creative "parklets" one day only at Baked & Wired (1052 Thomas Jefferson St. NW), Luke’s Lobster (1211 Potomac St. NW), The Urban Land Institute (1025 Thomas Jefferson St. NW), and DC Water (intersection of Wisconsin & K Streets, NW).

Popular local bakery and coffeehouse Baked & Wired plans an interactive pop-up parklet that will include reclaimed railroad tracks as well as fresh plants and grass; buckets filled with chalk encourage visitors to draw or write messages in the “park.” Designed to encourage community gathering and conversation, the parklet will also feature live music throughout the day.

The parklet at Maine lobster roll company Luke’s Lobster will include outdoor seating and decor in keeping with the company’s coastal New England theme.

The Urban Land Institute parklet will encourage visitors to relax and have fun while learning about ULI and our mission to ‘create better places.’ The parklet design is inspired by ULI’s Building Healthy Places Toolkit, and is constructed of modular shipping palettes configured into living ‘green’ walls, recycled carpet tiles, a one-hole mini-golf course, and unique site furniture for lounging and working,

Visitors will also have the opportunity to play Urban Plan, ULI’s innovative city planning and development game, which captures the complex trade-offs and challenging issues of land-use decisions via an engaging game of Legos.
