'DIHISCENT: Out of the Closet & Off the Walls'

Addison/Ripley Fine Art presents an interesting new group exhibition, DIHISCENT: Out of the Closet & Off the Walls opening, Friday July 10 and continuing through August 21, 2015

As Chris Addison explains, “Dihiscent” was the product of a visit to our gallery's off-site storage spaces where they keep much of the work traded, purchased, bought back or gifted to us during the more than 30 years we have been in the gallery business." The title suggests seeds bursting from a pod or seed vessel much the way our collected art has spilled out of the warehouse. They are very pleased to offer this rich cross section of their archived gallery art with the hope that visitors will enjoy a brief tour through Addison/Ripley as collectors.

While they keep a running inventory of objects, nothing is as revealing and pleasurable as walking through the storage facility and pulling things out of the racks to revisit and reassess. A very strong, colorful and dimensional 90s piece by Sam Gilliam, a subtle Robert Ryman white on white print from Parasol Press, part of the “Couples” Portfolio, early 80s works by husband and wife artists Patrice Kehoe and W.C. Richardson, an Alex Katz floral print from a show we did two decades ago on prints from the 1960s, a tiny geometric painting by a french artist we acquired from now defunct Gallery K, a classic Leon Berkowitz painting lovingly restored, it’s delicate auras a nice reminder of the last of the Washington Color School, a tribute watercolor by recently deceased Washington artist Val Lewton.

There is more. Works by more than twenty artists made over the last thirty years. A small work by Jim Sunburn, two recent photographs by E. Brady Robinson and a photo-collage by Geanna Merola that was featured in Art in America in 1988 reveal the gallery’s eclectic tastes and wide range of interests. The collection includes photographs, prints, multiples, mixed media work, works on paper, watercolors, oils and collages. With no particular theme other than what the title suggests, they have curated ourselves and made a pleasing journey through a career of acquisitions.

Addison/Ripley Fine Art is located at 1670 Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown. Tel: 202.338.5180

Note: The gallery will not be open on Saturdays during the month of August.
