The Art of Presidential Portraits at Tudor Place Feb.18

Landmark Society presents a special lecture: Verisimilitude or Vanity? The Dynamic Art of Presidential Portraits at Tudor Place on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 from 7:00-8:30 pm. Wine and light appetizers will be served at 6:30 pm.

The pull between verisimilitude and making the sitter look good has been a constant strain in portrait painting over the centuries,” notes February speaker Brandon Fortune, Chief Curator and Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the National Portrait Gallery.

Join Dr. Fortune as she examines the evolution of Presidential portraits since they were first commissioned. As their iconography changed with the times, what can such images tell us about the roles of presidents and the men themselves? And from Washington to Kennedy, what do they reveal about us, the people whom they governed?
