Tea Partiers take to the streets, er, sidewalks of Georgetown

They're frustrated, they're energized, they're on the move. And despite charges by the mainstream media that they represent the fringe, members of the Tea Party revolution strolled right into Georgetown Saturday after marching on the Mall, mingling quite comfortably (thank you) in the heart of the media gulch that has repeatedly dismissed them.

Steps away from the homes of Ben and Sally, Bob Woodward and Maureen Dowd, Liz Friend of Hickory, North Carolina and three friends walked by Dean & Deluca in search of a pleasant dinner after attending Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor march. "We wanted to have a good time while we're saving our country," Friend, a California native, joked.
If an army marches on its stomach, as Napoleon said, hand it to these Tea Partiers for having the good taste to refuel in Georgetown.
Jokes aside, Friend said, the event, while not political, was an important exercise in correcting America's course. "I'm frustrated by the out-of-control spending and terrible debt that our government is putting on our grand kids. How are they going to pay for it?" she asked.
"We want conservative candidates," said Trish Gabriel, a quilter from Hickory. "It's not about Democrats or Republicans."
"We want candidates who honor the Constitution," added Judy Hughes, a part-time home health-care worker. "We want candidates who will stop giving away our rights, and giving away our country."
About a year ago, Friend, Gabriel, Hughes and their friend Joyce Sigmon joined the Foothills 9/12 Project. Inspired by Beck and alarmed by what they see as a vast expansion of government, crippling debt, and rising taxes, they joined the local group and have attended several marches in Washington. "It makes me feel good to see so many others here," said Hughes. "I wanted to know I wasn't alone."
Beck's march drew tens if not hundreds of thousands to Washington. Billed as a non-political event, the gathering nonetheless was clear in its electoral import: This army is on the march toward Election Day.

Of course, none of this changes the fact that Beck and Palin and their "tea party" cultists are morons, poseurs, racists and far-right, fringe conservatives who are out of step with the majority, with the zeitgeist, with intelligence, with most people on the planet, and with reality. Actually, your comment is incorrect. The people attending tea party rallies are hard-working, God-fearing, conservative Americans. They're the people who make this country work. God bless America!
