Shells, Mother of Pearl, Silver Mesh: Sylvia Gottwald's Genius

Architect and jewelry designer Sylvia Gottwald greeted guests at Bistrot Lepic & Wine Bar on Saturday afternoon as the French restaurant and wine bar hosted a reception to launch its exhibit of 20 pieces of her wearable art which will remain on display through April 16.

The Croatian-born designer, who summers on the island of Korcula, spends a part of the year in Washington.  She studied in Rome and Montreal before earning a Masters in Architecture at Harvard.  She pursued urban planning at MIT and worked internationality in her chosen fields as well as cultural heritage preservation.

During extensive travels in Asia, she collected rare shells an objects made from mother of pearl.  As a staunch protectionist of the endangered marine environment, she selects shell species that are renewable and plentiful as her principal raw material.

Her bold contemporary art pieces incorporating rubber, stainless steel mesh, gold and silver, have been featured in leading fashion and design magazines and exhibited at the Louvre, Museum of Modern Art and Museum of Contemporary Art Kempa in Prague.
