Early Wednesday morning, at approximately 12:10 am,  a woman was robbed along the C & O Canal in Georgetown. According to Lieutenant John M. Hedgecock of the Second District, Metropolitan Police Department, "The victim was crossing the footbridge over the canal located closest to the rear of the 3200 block of Grace Street.  A lone male approached the victim from the rear grabbing her by the arm while simultaneously shoving an unknown object into her back.  He then ordered her to put down her bag and remove all her jewelry, to which she complied.  The offender then gathered the items and fled the scene on foot.  There is no further descriptive information available for the offender at this time."

Anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to contact the Second District Detectives Office on 202.730.1903.  Additionally, anyone observing any suspicious person(s) in and around their business or home is strongly encouraged to contact the Metropolitan Police Department by dialing 911.

This type of crime is happening way too often in Georgetown and is unacceptable. Hopefully, CAG can get their cameras up and running soon. DC police does a great job, but clearly they are not a deterrent to these criminals. We need video surveillance in Georgetown and we need it now.

The streets surrounding this area need to be better lit. There are many dark alleys around Cherry Hill Lane and Potomac with plenty of places for people to be ready to attack. Walking around this area alone at night is quite frieghtening.

Very sorry for the young lady, but this type of incident has been broadcast over and over again. Perhaps along with broadcasting warnings about these incidents, we should also advise people not to wear "bling" while walking in isolated places late at night. Alone or with someone, it is not a good idea.

Cameras do not deter crime... it only catches the bad guys later..more police present at night would do it and police officer that like to run to an immediate call not lag behind so they don't have to worry about about getting shot.

Big Brother cameras will only catch the college kids peeing in the streets.

Cameras are ugly and not very historic.

tougher jail time, better police present and looser DC hand gun law would scare the hell at of those bad guys that smash and crab.

Oh no--I live right near this location and can say that this footbridge is really dimly lit and is right next to the Georgetown Park Mall. There have been times that I have hesitated to walk there even at 7 pm when it is dark. We need more lights at this footbridge, along Grace Street, and along Potomac and Cecil. I NEVER see any police patrols. I am just grateful that this woman was not injured. But this robbery makes me hesitant to walk this footbridge or the street even in the early evening if it dark outside.

I cannot agree with the comments above. Who do we contact about getting more lights? I agree with the previous comment that I am scared to walk at 7:00PM. I do not work out in the morning because I am too scared to walk on Cecil or Grace during those early hours. If I am coming home late at night, I hold my pepper spray in front of me and almost expect to be mugged. Since this is one of Georgetown's more commercial areas, I do not think that adding lights would take away from the historic aspect of the area.

I absolutely love living in Georgetown during the day, but the nights are another story. It really can be solved by better lighting.
