The Legacy Award is a particularly special honor, not only because it is only the second such honor to be awarded, but also because both the nomination and selection process is made by other highly-esteemed dermatologists. Dr. Alster was chosen for this award based on her many groundbreaking contributions to the world of dermatology and laser surgery, including involvement in dermatologic academia, clinical research, and medical practice innovation.

In response to being selected, Dr. Alster said, "In the last quarter century, the advancements in skincare and technology and the public's recognition of their importance, have been incredible. I'm very honored to have been recognized for my contributions."

Dr. Alster’s influence in the field began with her establishment of the first freestanding dermatologic laser center in the world – the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery- in 1990. She published the first textbook on the subject shortly thereafter and has since contributed over 250 publications and seven additional books that have significantly advanced the specialty.

Dr. Alster maintains leadership and board positions in numerous professional and national organizations. Her commitment to teaching and mentoring others is evident in her establishment of scholarship endowments for women pursuing careers in medicine at Duke University as well as her ongoing teaching responsibilities at Georgetown University where she is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology.

Dr. Alster has served as the consulting dermatologist to Lancôme and is currently a global skin advisor to La Mer. She developed her own skin care line SKIN IS IN in 2011 and launched W for MEN, the first cosmetic and clinical dermatology center exclusively dedicated to the treatment of men’s skin in 2013. In both academia and medical practice innovation, Dr. Alster has had a profound impact in the field of dermatology.
