Flights of Fancy, the theme of the 55th Washington Antiques Show held this past weekend paid tribute to creativity and innovation in the decorative arts and inaugurated its own innovation for new collectors. While the loan exhibition “The Eagle Takes Flight – Symbol of a New Nation” organized by the Society of Cincinnati was a major highlight, the New Collectors Evening on Saturday was a stand out.
Younger attendees, adorned with Mardi Gras beads that granted them bar access, mingled happily with the 44 premiere dealers who displayed treasures of majolica, antique American wicker, Audubon lithographs, Georgian silver and so much more.
The Antiques Show preview evening always gathers Washington’s Old Guard like Senator John Warner (who actually falls into the category of discerning collector). The sight of a New Guard forming eager to support good taste for a worthy cause was a delight. One of the evening’s radiant organizers exceeded all bounds: she was scheduled to give birth the following day, yet stood by her post!
The Washington Antiques Show, held this year in the Katzen Arts Center at American University, directs the net proceeds from the show to Thrift Shop Charities.
