WaPo Has Good News for DCers on a Diet
The Washington Post's POSTLOCAL section declared that area restaurants have recently left diners disappointed. Post restaurant critic, Tom Sietsema, hosted a live chat on Wednesday about the "several dispiriting meals" he's been subjected to this week. An online chatter agreed that formerly solid choices are leaving something to be desired. Sietsema chalks this up to a range of possible factors; the heat, “too many young chefs taking time off to be new parents,” or the sluggish economy.

Could it be true? Look for me this weekend because I’ll be toting my camera around Georgetown to see what you think.

Evans cleared of campaign finance allegations
Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans no longer has to worry that a photo used in a 2008 campaign advertisement will come back to bite him. The Legal Times reports, “In a ruling handed down August 5, the D.C. Court of Appeals determined that three Ward 2 residents were not “adversely affected” by the photo, showing Evans, who is of counsel to Patton Boggs, arm-in-arm with D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier.” For all the ends and outs of the decisions, check out D.C. Appeals Court Upholds Dismissal of Campaign Finance Allegations Against Jack Evans

Gray, Fenty release lastest ads
The D.C. Mayoral campaign shifted into high gear today with a new video ad by challenger Vincent Gray, D.C. Council Chair. An emotional 60-second spot, using footage from NBC4's veteran newsman Tom Sherwood, seeks to capture voter disappointment in Mayor Adrian Fenty's handling of the city's less affluent, heavily African-American residents. In contrast, Fenty's latest ad features D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans, stating that Fenty "plays well with others." The Georgetown Dish offers the ads and their complete transcripts below:
Tom Sherwood: Even as the city's leading politicians celebrated the new library, Fenty was reminded that some citizens aren't happy. Like this mother who confronted him about jobs and housing.
Mother: You were helping us...
Fenty: Sure.
Mother: You were supporting us...
Fenty: Sure.
Mother: And then you turned your back on us.
Fenty: Yup, yeah, I didn't do the job I'm supposed to. (music)
Mother: You turned your back on us.
Fenty: Yup, yeah. I didn't do the job I'm supposed to...
Jack Evans: Some people say that Adrian Fenty doesn't play well with others. School Without Walls was built under his leadership after 15 years of promises. As the longest-serving member of the D.C. Council, I know that Adrian Fenty can work with others -- and get results -- in moving our city forward.

Washington Post readers defy endorsement, vote for Gray
Last Sunday, The Washington Post editorial board endorsed Mayor Adrian Fenty for re-election in the September Democratic primary against challenger Vincent Gray, D.C. Council Chair. At the same time, the Post asked readers for their opinions. As of August 3rd, Gray received 75% of the vote, compared with Fenty's 23%. Were readers voting on The Post's early, some say premature, edorsement, as well as the candidates?

Savvy shopper finds most expensive thing at Safeway
The Georgetown Metropolitan (GM) spotted the $999 price tag below at the Social Safeway and reports: "That’s not a typo. At least GM doesn’t think so. What you see there is a locked case of truffles in the Safeway produce section selling for $999.99 per pound.

GM did a quick run through of the store to see if anything came close to this in terms of price. Only a few bottles of wine and champagne topped the multi-hundred dollar range, but nothing close to this.
Real truffles (unlike their chocolate counterparties) are a type of fungus found in the ground. Traditionally, pigs have been used to find the truffles. Despite this, people seem to like them. Or, at the very least, pay a ton of money for them.
That’s about the extent of GM’s knowledge of truffles. For those with more expensive tastes than he, would you really pay a cool grand a pound for truffles from Safeway?"

Georgetown condominium going up for auction
Auctioneers are seeking bids by Friday for a bank-owned, 10,000-foot residential property at 2136 Wisconsin Avenue. A property which the Washington Business Journal describes as "hard hit by the recession," the building was built in 2007 but its owners could not successfully find residents before the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union reclaimed it.
"Since bids opened about three months ago, embassies, nonprofits, foundations and academic groups have all shown interest," WBJ writes.
The number of bids and the probable sales price is not known, but the credit union has promised to finance the property for the buyer, who will need to finish the 95 percent complete building before it can sign on residents.

CVS Sighting: Rahm Emanuel
Looking tan, rested and ready (how does he do it?), White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel breezed in and out of the CVS in Glover Park Sunday afternoon. Wearing a light-blue button-down and khakis, he hopped out of a black SUV, with one Secret Service agent following him into the store.
It may take a bigger "Entourage" (the HBO series based on the life of his brother, Ari Emanuel, founder of the Endeavor talent agency) to keep Rahm in the Obama administration. The London Telegraph says the White House Chief of Staff will quit late this year, probably after November's mid-term elections, having grown tired of clashing with Obama's "idealistic inner circle" of advisers.

Bye-bye, Rahm?
