Film on Avicii at House of Sweden April 22nd
In conjunction with the exhibition The Creative Nation: Swedish Tech and Innovation, currently on display in House of Sweden, there will be a showing of Avicii: True Stories by Levan Tsikurishvili on April 22, 2018 starting at 3:00 pm.
Admission is free and film has English subtitles.
Avicii: True Stories traces the unvarnished truth behind the success of Grammy-nominated producer, songwriter and artist Avicii (A.K.A. Tim Bergling)– one of the world’s highest grossing live music artists whose seemingly sudden decision in 2016 to quit doing live shows came as a complete chock to his fans and the industry. The film reveals the choices he faced and his thoughts at the time. Avicii died April 20, 2018.
The film traces the Swedish artist/DJ’s life from his beginnings, all the way to the joy of his success, from his chart-topping global radio hits and subsequent struggles with his physical and mental health. Tsikurishvili followed Bergling for over four years, and captured fly-on-the-wall footage of his experiences and thinking. Featuring appearances by colleagues such as Chris Martin, Nile Rodgers, David Guetta and Wyclef Jean, Avicii: True Stories is a cautionary tale that explores the taxing nature and intensity of fame from the artist's point of view as much as it is a film for Avicii’s die-hard fans.

Arturo Sandoval Live at Blues Alley May 10-13
Ten-time Grammy winning Latin Jazz legend, Arturo Sandoval will be performing live at Blues Alley May 10 through May 13, 2018.
Granted political asylum in July 1990 and US citizenship in 1999, Sandoval and his family now call Miami, Florida home. A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the World’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.
Arturo Sandoval is fluent in at least four musical languages. He can burn through an Afro-Cuban groove, tear up a bebop tune, soar over a Mozart concerto and sooth you with a luscious ballad; with equal power and grace.

Karin Broos Exhibition at House of Sweden
One of Sweden’s’ most widely recognized artists, Karin Broos, will be presenting her Still Life series at House of Sweden through June 24, 2018 on Saturdays & Sundays from noon until 5:00 pm. FREE admission and guide on site.
With her photorealistic portrayals of apparently everyday scenes, she expresses ambiguous sentiments and universal feelings of melancholia and gloom.
Karin Broos started her career as an abstract painter after studying at ’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands before moving on to photorealism. The subjects in her atmospheric works are mainly from her home in Östra Ämtervik, the Värmland countryside, the Fryken lakes, and her own family. These works often portray individuals in her close family, her daughters, her grandchildren, or herself. Karin Broos’ work also often explores different kinds of interiors and self-portraits, referring to 17th century Dutch paintings and symbolism as well as to contemporary art. In this exhibition, her work is complemented by the inclusion of excerpts from Sara Broos’ acclaimed film Speglingar (Reflections) about a mother-daughter relationship and intriguing artist talks and events relating to Karin Broos’ oeuvre.
Curated by: Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde Art Museum and Alma Löv Museum.
House of Sweden is located at 2900 K Street in Georgetown.

A Royal Wedding Party in Kensington
Fifteen cities in the US and one place in the UK share the name “Kensington.” Next to that iconic UK address, the best place to celebrate the upcoming royal nuptials on Saturday, May 19th is The Dish & Dram in Kensington, MD.
The restaurant literally rolls out the red carpet to celebrate the revolutionary union between the US and UK with a celebration fit for a king (queen, prince or princess) all day long on Saturday, May 19th beginning at 7:00 am.
Not only will the televisions be trained on the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but along with standard menu items, The Dish & Dram will start the day with a brunch including classic Bangers & Mash. This traditional British breakfast unites sausages and mashed potatoes ($18) for a hearty dish that’s a classic on tables throughout the UK, and scones, because what British day would be complete without scones ($3)? The celebration will continue all day long with pints of Lowest Lord ESB ($6.50). What could be higher than The Ultimate ‘High’ Tea—a steaming 20 oz. pot of Gin tea, enough for two—the restaurant’s signature Kensington Grey tea with Elderflower (an ingredient in the royal wedding cake) and orange bitters with dry Beefeater Gin ($25). Also on the menu is a pairing of a bottle of British Bubbly Fit for a Duchess, Court Garden Sparkling Rose, with two all American hot dogs topped with champagne mustard and crispy onions ($85).

For the little royals, there will be a ‘Prince and Princess Parade’ following the wedding at 9:00 am. Younger restaurant guests are invited to dress as royalty. Best costume will receive a gift certificate for a free kids’ meal. For the more adult Ladies and Gentlemen in Waiting, Fascinators are recommended. Whether worn with PJs (let’s face it, it’s early) or with a full-blown cape and scepter ensemble (for the sake of propriety, keep those crown jewels under wraps), The Dish & Dram staff will be scoping the best all day. The winner will receive a $25 restaurant gift certificate.
The Dish & Dram is located at 10301 Kensington Parkway, Kensington, MD. It is open Tues - Sat: 11:30 am - 5:30 pm lunch, 5:30 pm - 9:30 ish-pm for dinner; Sun: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm for brunch. Happy Hour: 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm Monday to Friday.
