City Tavern Club hosts Fashion, Music and Art for Autism

On Saturday June 4, the CSAAC Foundation was the beneficiary of an elegant evening entitled "Fashion, Music, and Art for Autism" held at the historic City Tavern Club in Georgetown.  Over 150 guests nibbled on cupcakes, sipped champagne, perused the silent auction, and enjoyed a classical piano performance by Juilliard Fellow Dr. Edvinas Minkstimas, regarded as one of Europe’s top emerging pianists.

When the clock struck nine, host committee members Janine Schoonover and Kimberly Robinson introduced the crowd to the runway show of couture fashions for the everyday woman by Maggie Burges from CAS Boutique, and a whimsical art-as-fashion collection by DC artist Don Patron, which featured photos of individuals with autism supported by the work of the CSAAC foundation. The event raised over 10,000 dollars for autism support, research, and awareness. The models were made to look their absolute best with the amazing hair and make-up stylings of Salon Roi, the longstanding neighborhood salon in Woodley Park.

The Fashion, Music, and Art host committee included: Lolly Amos, Rokas Beresniovas, Bill Farrand, Wendy Gordon, Michele Lebar, Dr. Richard Meyer, Kimberly Robinson, Janine Schoonover, Marilyn Thompson, Angelique Velez and Jenny Zinn.

Authentic Italian fare with a flair at il Canale!

This time of year, the cool breeze coming from the C&O Canal gently hits il Canale’s outdoor rooftop and pairs perfectly with delicious pizza made fresh and cooked to perfection in a wood-fired oven imported from Naples.

Owner Giuseppe “Joe” Farruggio was born in Italy and he strives to always serve the “Lamborgini” of pizza.  You just might see him situated behind the pizza counter tossing a pie crust or two in the air. 

The wait staff at il Canale is known for engaging in polite chatter – sometimes in several different languages – and they take the time to talk with patrons to impart their vast knowledge about the authentic Neapolitan menu items.  Executive Chef Antonio Biglietto, a true Italian, makes the pizzas to comply with Denominazione di Origine Controllata standards with Italian flour and mozzarella di bufala that is stored in water and never refrigerated.  The wood oven gives pizza crust a smoky flavor and, per Naples style, is delicate and thin enough to provide the perfect stage for flavorful toppings such as fresh basil and oregano, artichoke, mushroom, prosciutto, ham, eggplant, sheep ricotta and more.

An Italian-style appetizer followed by pizza and bottle of Italian wine or beer makes for a simple, yet satisfying and delicious meal. According to one satisfied customer, the tomato sauce is “just sexy and yummy,” and the bread was “just SO perfect – warm and fluffy with olive oil on the side.”
